I am currently a soon to be graduated SysAdmin from RIT. I am looking for full time employment after school. I am well adapted to working with people, machines, problems, networks, and life. I'll post a link to my resume, which i really need to redo from scratch, open office and office XP like to work together to mangle formatting.
09-05-09 Back at RIT for my last quarter, hopefully. Out of work with no real great prospects. Yay economy...
08-26-09 A pic my friend just made describing the most underated attributes of some professional females. ;-)
08-22-09 OpenRPG version that works for server and clients (ubuntu default is WAAAAYYYYY old)
08-21-09 A strange cable I found in the storage closet at my job. Its a standard eitheret cable with a small steal box and padlock aroung one ofthe connectors. I have NO IDEA what it was for or who made it. Just a strang peice of stuff i found
07-06-2009 Just started a new job 2 weeks ago as a full time sysadmin for a DC/CRS Facility. all i can say is wow...feature creep.
04-23-2009 In the market for a job, anybody need a Sys Admin? or an intern for that? in the NJ area?
01-01-2009 My new TS server is up. its here but on port 8768
I have a tendency to build/install/create/implement/botch-together solutions and installations and leave them functioning in place. Of my personall installations there is my home server setup, which is "colocated" in my moms basement. That is what the SecCam at the top of the page is watching over.
That setup consists of a few dumpster saved systems, 2 to be exact. One is a CentOS 5.2 box acting as an SSH server as well as an OpenVPN server. It is a p4 system with 512 ddr 333. Its has very little storage, but has run almost non stop for the past 2 years. I have named it bender. Botched off of his powersupply is a small belkin router that provided the tubes for this setup, which i have nmes Farnsworth. Just a standard household grade belkin wireless router (wireless is turned off).
The other system is my universal Ubuntu server. It has a decent amount of storage, at around 300gig, it is also running a P4 and has 1 gig 4 ddr 400. I use it as a file server, a backup dump, and a game server, mostly Gmod, but also Maptool for online pen + paper gaming. It is also the camera server. I have named it Scruffy
I also had a IDS system running here, on a p3 with 512 Sdr 133 ram, but developed some form of issue that cause it to crash after about 48 hours. I have not repaired it since it seems to be not worth it for me right now. This ones name was Flexo
For my professional installations, there is no botch work. I have built 3 servers that are still in use today, one of which you are on right now. This one is Ganymede, it is colocated in Florida, my friend from RIT asked me about a parts list he was developing to build a server for him and his friends to use. They were tired of having "my internet/power/rent went out, so the server is down" issue. They decided to pool there money and build the best server the could and send it to sit in a DC so that it could be gaurnteed up 24/7. The list they gave consisted of an entry level dell poweregde server, which was fairly overpriced, and had hard limits to scalability. He had spec'ed out the max ram for the system as well as a decently powerfull Dual core chip for it. The only problems i saw where his budget, which for less i had build Vader (see below). I took that list and reconfigured it, i decided to recomend a HP Prolient systemthat had a decent Quad chip in it, 8 gig ram, and 2x 1TB drives. I elected to go with consumer grade drive since this system was not a "High Usage" setup, as well as a recomendation from my employer at the time who had been using consumer level drives in a production RAID for years without issue.
Another system i built was for on paid internship i did for school. The system was an IDS using the OSSIM distribution, so it was IDS, PortScanning, Vulnerability Scanning, Inventory, and SSH gateway. Looking back i probably would have made a simpler/better configuration with less fluff. This was built on a Prolient ML 350 system, with a raid 5 array or 5 drives + a hot spare, 8 gig of ddr2 800, single quad core Xeon. I still do work on this system from time to time. Its name was Vader.
The most recent build i did was for my last interneship, a different company than before, and was also an IDS. I built it ontop of a fresh Fedora 11 install, since all i had to work with there were CD's (no budget for IT deptartment consiting of Me). The hardware for this one was harder to figure out, it had 4 gig of ddr2, and dual quad core chip xeons. It was either a no name brand or a built system. The company wan't using it since it weas given to them from a prospective partner who disappeared afterwards. To my knowledge it still works, although i was not allowed/able to get access to it from outside the network. I contained a Snort+MySql+Apache install, with nTop, nagios and phpsysinfo. It functioned fairly well, but i doubt it will be touched ever again. I was not happy with some of the compramises i had to make with it, such as no hardware raid, and no drive mirroring. But oh well, they weren't looking for a full time IT guy anyway, although they desperatly need one. This one was named Fry (by Me).
I am currently working on a few thing to occupy my time and aid in my world domination plans kitten feeding program.
Heres a short list of what I am working on:
Haxed vibrating alarm clock. A friend of mine wants to have a vibrating clock, or a clock with a vibrating attachment to wake them up via shaking rather than noise. My current plan is to us a small scrap built circut with relay powered off the buzzer setting on an old alarm clock radio, with an extrerna power supply to a vibrator that is strapped to the frame of the bed, only parts to be purchased are the relay itself and the vibrator/PS combo, and that is if i don't hax one together myself
Aux cable hands free head set. Another friend of my baught a "blue tooth Ready" car radio, turns out it needs an adapter to enable the blue tooth, so he asked me if i could build one out of some old headsets he had, and if i can still make it work through the radio. Idea so far is hax an aux in cable to the ear peice for an old head set and some how get a mic to work withoiut feedback.
DONE Rain gutter dash orginiser. Already finished, same guy as the head set, his car has no cup holders by design (it was made without them), so he and i took a trip to Home Depot and got some random gutter partes and some velcro, plus some tools that i haven't aquired yet on my own. Heres the result:
APM desing/redesign/modification. An APM is a Ambient Power Module, first patented by Joe Tate. It take ambient RF noise and turns it into electricity. Tate's were deployed to study the effect of EM feilds with regards to earthquakes in California. My current prototype is built out of scrap parts from deconstructions of failed computer hardware, but mostly is a bunch of diodes configured wot turn the AC of the RF to DC, and produces 2.34v with a single LED worth of load. I how to later improve thedesign to use better diodes (ones without resitance / V drop) and also to operate at higher frequencies (like microave), also an improvemnt would be to get a good amount of power out of the system so that it can be applied in heavier applications, such as battery charging.
APM ImageP2PRVNC. I started working on a script that would allow for VNC viewing of machines via a SSH port forward style connection, but have it be done through a P2P setup with NAT punch through as core feature, so that a person inside of one small office, behind a NAT, can veiw the screen of another person in a hotel, behind a NAT without needing an SSH server in between, but only a P2P coordination server. This would mean that all the data for the actual VNC session would only be passed between the two hosts, and not the central server. Currently on hold because of lack of time from classes.
This Site This site is a work in progress, so far only simple HTML, but may expand later when I get more time to learn. If you see any mistakes or wish to give insite on anything, you can email me at this server (you can figure out the email form the web address)
Deviant Art: I post a journel there seldomly, and will post any art/photos I make, but currently just have a huge fav and watch list.
ElfWood: I haven't been on here is a long time, but has some bio stuff on me.
HackADay: Been Reading this site for a while, and recently joind the forums, cool gadgets and hardware mods + security news.
More to come
